County Courthouse Computer System
December 24, 2006

Posted by Eric Metze

Good news from Dwight McDonald! After almost three years of wrangling, it looks like remote access to the Lubbock County Courthouse computer system will be available about January 1st. David Slayton will demonstrate the system to anyone who drops by his office between now and then. More to come, later.

Prairie Dog Lawyer’s Seminar
December 15, 2006

Posted by Eric Metze

1. At this time we appear to be on par with last year’s registration. Please pre-register by December 15th. If you sign up at the door, there will NOT be books available. Fax your registration, today! Officers and other “very important people” still must register. Only course directors and speakers do not have to register. Don’t be shut out, register now.

Click here to view and print registration form. Fax it today, even if it’s past the 15th.

2. Please send in your $100 for tickets to the Thursday night party. Give extra tickets to court personnel or employees for good PR. They really appreciate going to the party and its always nice to have a big crowd.

3. David Slayton will be present during the seminar to give demonstrations of the new remote access to the Lubbock County computer system available in January.

New Members Only Section
December 6, 2006

In the next few days we will be switching over to a new Members Only section. It will be very similar to the original one, but it will be better and (hopefully) hacker-proof. I am updating the site as you read this, so keep checking back right here for updates. This post will change as needed.

Book Review of Tulia
December 5, 2006

Posted by Eric Metze

Chuck Lanehart has written a book review of Tulia by author Nate Blakeslee of the Texas Observer following the saga of “race, cocaine, and corruption in a small Texas town.” The text of the review is available in the Resources forum of the Member’s Only section. Just another reason to join the fun!

Victory: Rusty Gunter, Fred Stangl

Another mistrial, this time for Rusty Gunter. It was a felony DWI in 137th. Out of 50 jurors called, 27 were struck for cause by agreement, leaving too few for a jury. Fred Stangl helped (it was The Tangler’s third consecutive mistrial). Great job, guys!

Victory: Fred Stangl, Rusty Gunter

Congratulations to The Tangler! Fred Stangl managed a hung jury/mistrial (11-1 for guilty) in the 140th. Jury was out 6.5 hours. It was a 1st degree, 28-gram PCS/intent to deliver. Fred convinced one juror the cop was not credible about the “reasonable suspicion” to stop. Thanks to Rusty Gunter, who helped pick the one smart juror. Way to go, gladiators!
